What causes orbital pain

In our daily lives, many people may experience orbital pain due to various reasons. So, what exactly is causing the orbital pain?Let's look at this together below.

1 Corneal and Conjunctival Diseases

The cornea refers to the black part of the eye, while the bulbar conjunctiva is the white outer layer.

Due to microbial infection or physical chemical factors causing inflammation, there can be a stabbing pain or gritty sensation in the eyes. During an acute episode, redness, increased discharge, photophobia (sensitivity to light), and more tears are common.Chronic inflammation may only cause mild discomfort or irritation in the eyelid conjunctiva, with possible formation of eye grit.In such cases, treatment is targeted towards the inflammation or associated lid grit.

2 Visual Fatigue

Visual fatigue often occurs among office workers due to prolonged near work. It can also affect students, editors, and writers. This pain is characterized by a dull ache, difficulty opening eyes, increased tearing, but it improves with rest.Visual fatigue commonly affects office workers.

If the patient has refractive errors or significant differences between both eyes, or if they are experiencing age-related decreased accommodation, wearing glasses can exacerbate eye discomfort and fatigue.

In such cases, an accurate refraction is needed to prescribe appropriate glasses (especially for near work), along with adequate rest. The eye discomfort and fatigue will gradually decrease after rest.

3 Superior Orbital Fissure Neuralgia

This is a neuralgia of unknown cause. Since the supraorbital nerve innervates the upper orbital area and its surrounding skin, pain may originate from this region or extend to the eye itself.

How should one handle orbital pain

1 Gently Pressing on the Eye

After staring at a computer screen for over an hour, close your eyes immediately and relax for 5 seconds. Then, gently place your index, middle, and ring fingers of both hands under your eyelids and press lightly on the eyeball. Press 20 times before rotating the eye in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction.Stop after about 20 seconds.

2 Relieving Forehead Method

Often, eye pain can lead to headache. Therefore, use your three fingers from each hand to slide from the center of your forehead towards your temples. Then, apply pressure with your fingertips on the temple area. This will help relax and relieve your eyes as well.Repeat this process 3-5 times.

3 Massaging the Brow Ridge

Close your eyes, place your thumb under the center of your eyebrows, where it feels sunken, press for 10 seconds, then gently rotate 10 times.Perform this massage three times. Then open your eyes and move your eyeballs in four directions: up-down-left-right. Keep your head still and blink frequently.
